Getting Started
Here are the basic accessories for cloth diapering to get you
started.
- 1 diaper pail. (This can be any 13qt trashcan with a lid; we prefer a
metal step to open kitchen trash can found at Wal-Mart).
(Approximately $20.00)
- 1-2 diaper pail liners. These are made of waterproof PUL and can
be washed with your diapers, eliminating the need to clean out your
diaper pail. ($16.50 x 2= $33.00)
- 1-2 wetbags. These are great for carrying used cloth diapers when
you're out and about! Much more stylish than a plastic bag, and with
a zippered top, they prevent odors from "leaking" out. ($17.50 x 2=
$35.00)
- 24 cloth wipes and wipes solution. Cloth wipes are wonderfully soft
and much more economical than buying disposables. They can be
thrown in the diaper pail with the diapers! (4- six packs x $5.00=
$20.00) plus wipes solution ($7.95)
- Petroleum-free diaper cream. We like Northern Essence's Better
Butt-er Cream. ($5.50)
Total cost for accessories: $121.45
Which cloth diapers will work best and how many do you need? That
will all depend on your budget and needs. No matter what you
decide, it is important to have enough diapers for 2 full days of
diaper changes (18 or so) and a night time solution (We'll cover that
more below). These estimates are based on the cost of diapers
from birth through potty training (2 1/2 years or so.) We definitely
didn't buy everything at once, and we recommend that you don't
either! You don't want to blow your budget at once and then decide
you want to try something different! Below are several common
options with approximate costs.
For night time, especially as your baby gets older, you need to have
extra inserts or smaller prefolds to layer with your regular diaper. For
my 14 month old, a Thirsties cover, a regular prefold diaper, a
microfiber insert and a infant sized prefold combined keep her dry
for 12 hours!
Most Economical:
- 2 dozen infant prefolds (24 x $2.00= $48.00)
- 2 dozen regular prefolds (24 x $2.25=$54.00)
- 3 small Thirsties diaper covers (3x $10.95=$32.85)
- 3 medium Thirsties diaper covers (3x $10.95=$32.85)
- 3 large Thirsties diaper covers (3x $10.95=$32.85)
- 4 snappis (4x $2.49=$9.96)
Total cost for diapering: $210.51 plus accessories.
Most Convenient:
- 24 pocket or all in one diapers in small, medium, and large or one
size (for our purposes we'll use HH oneszie.) (18.95 x 24= $454.80)
Total cost for diapering: $454.80 plus accessories.
Somewhere in Between:
- 1 dozen infant prefolds (12 x $2.00= $24.00)
- 1 dozen regular prefolds (12 x $2.25= $27.00)
- 2 snappis (2x $2.49= $4.98)
- 2 small Thirsties diaper covers (2x $10.95= $21.90)
- 2 medium Thirsties diaper covers (2x $10.95= $21.90)
- 2 large Thirsties diaper covers (2x $10.95= $21.90)
- 12 sized or one size pocket diapers (12 x $18.95= $227.40)
Total cost for diapering: $349.08 plus accessories.
Although this may seem like a lot, consider that most
estimates for disposable diapering an infant from birth to
pottytraining are around $1500.00! Plus, you can't reuse
disposables for the next baby that comes around!
